Phan Thi Bao Vien

What I work on and what I care about.

I work across finance, retail, strategy and AI. This is a place for some of the work, ideas, books and learning that matter to me.

Portrait of Phan Thi Bao Vien
A business operator who kept moving closer to the system underneath the numbers.

My career began in finance, where I learned to see a company as one connected system: sales, margin, cost, inventory and cash flow influencing one another.

Over time, my work moved from controlling results to shaping them — through business intelligence, strategy, transformation, data, retail operations and AI.

I am drawn to problems that sit between functions. The interesting question is rarely “Which tool should we use?” It is usually: What are we really trying to improve? What is the logic? What data can we trust? What should remain a human decision?

The more technical my work becomes, the more important the human side feels. I want systems that are disciplined without becoming mechanical, and technology that expands capability without taking away ownership.

My compass

Four ideas I keep returning to.

01 · Systems

Technology should remove friction.

Automation is valuable when it quietly removes repetitive work, reduces error and gives people more space for judgment, relationships and decisions.

02 · Foundations

Data before AI.

Intelligence built on fragmented data and unclear processes only accelerates inconsistency. A coherent foundation is less glamorous — and more important.

03 · Architecture

Use the right intelligence layer.

Automation, BI and AI solve different problems and carry different economics. Good transformation starts by understanding what each layer should — and should not — do.

04 · Agency

AI comes after intention.

I use AI to challenge, expand and structure my thinking. I do not want it to quietly decide what is worth thinking about in the first place.

“The goal is not to make AI smarter than people. It is to make people stronger because AI exists.”
Path

From numbers to systems to transformation.

Foundation

Finance & business control

Learning to connect operational decisions with profitability, cash flow and the underlying economics of retail.

Build

Business intelligence & data

Moving repetitive reporting into structured systems and building a shared version of truth for better management conversations.

Expand

Strategy & transformation

Evaluating ideas against execution: continue, scale, adjust or stop — and connecting transformation activity to measurable impact.

Now

Retail, pricing & applied AI

Exploring how data, intelligence and human judgment can work together inside real operating systems — not just in prototypes.

Writing

Applied AI in Retail

I write to clarify what I think. The series began with practical retail problems, then gradually moved toward a larger question: how do we use AI without giving away the thinking that should still belong to us?

Applied AI in Retail: A Personal Compass

My starting point: technology should reduce friction, strengthen people, and connect ideas to real business impact.

Learning beyond institutions · 2021

Learning to take care of the inner life.

Some of the learning that shaped me most did not come with a degree or a certificate.

In 2021, I studied Jon Kabat-Zinn’s MasterClass on mindfulness and meditation. At the time, I did not think of it as career development. Looking back, it became something more foundational: a way of learning how to protect my inner worth, pay attention to my inner well-being, and gradually build the mental strength I would rely on later in life.

What stayed with me was not simply meditation as a practice. It was the idea that strength also comes from awareness — from being able to observe what is happening inside us without immediately being carried away by it.

MasterClass also gave me an unusual form of education. I listened to people such as Jon Kabat-Zinn, Dan Brown, James Cameron and other remarkable thinkers and creators talk about how they see, create and make sense of the world.

That experience still fills me with gratitude. From Vietnam, far from many of the places where these people lived and worked, I could sit quietly and learn directly from some of the greatest minds in the world. Listening to them did not give me a conventional qualification. It gave me something more personal: connection, perspective, curiosity and room for my own inner growth.

Still becoming

This page is not meant to be finished.

It is a living record of what I am learning, building, questioning and becoming — one article, project, book and conversation at a time.
